Fun with CodeIgniter & Twitter – Famousmention.com

After stumbling across the fantastic Tank-Auth library and the 3rd-party extension to it by ericbae (available on github), I thought it’d be a good opportunity to finally throw together a twitter web app. The product of this is Famous Mention.com, a tiny web app that allows you to check out who the most famous person to tweet you is & tweet out the result. Incidentally, my most famous @ message was from @leolaporte who has 302977 followers – decent!

Game Release: Wicked Little Devil (iPhone)

I recently released my first iPhone game – Wicked Little Devil. Check out my more “official” sounding press release below. I will be following this announcement post with a blog all about how I built, released and maintained the game.

From London-based Indie game developers, Wicked Little Games, comes the epic platforming adventure WICKED LITTLE DEVIL.

Help Sammael, The Angel of Hell, escape from the underworld in this new and exciting game from Wicked Little Games. Using your reactions and a collection of powerups, Sam will travel through earth, sea and sky as he tries to break free. Each complete with a unique graphical style and catchy tunes.

Once you’re free of the underworld, compete in challenge mode as you race against a growing pit of lava to survive as long as possible. Once you’ve attempted to jump from the depths of Hell, compare your scores globally with two dedicated Game Center leaderboards. Check out the latest game trailer over at Youtube and follow further development progress on Twitter and Facebook.

Developed by a two person team, Wicked Little Devil is the first of many games coming out of the Wicked Little Games studio production line.

Balancing Personal and Professional Development Projects

A few months ago, I decided to start developing my first iPhone game, Little Devil, alongside my full time job as a Web Developer in Central London. I didn’t have much experience with Objective C or iPhone development so I knew that it was going to be quite a daunting task. Alongside this I have a girlfriend & a relatively good social life, all of which contributed to the issues with developing something difficult in my spare time.

Now, 5 months later, I’ve learnt quite a bit on how to balance my professional, social and development life and here are a few tips/pointers for anyone wanting to do the same.

An introduction to the world of APIs

They’re a set of rules, regulations and restrictions, dictated by one applcation to allow another to interact & manipulate the content. API’s are, in general, offered as a free service – however there are often premium or paid versions of API’s which remove restrictions allowing more data to be captured.

6 jQuery plugins that are a little bit different

When looking for a jQuery plugin, it can often get a bit tedious scrolling through page after page of scrollers, carousels and crop tools. At one point I ran into an article named “28 Useful JQuery Sliders You Need To Download”. Twenty-eight?! Blimey.

So, to prove to myself that there was more to jQuery than content scrollers, I did some Google’ing and found 6 really unique jQuery plugins/extensions that are worth taking a look at.

Simple Cocos2D Collision Detection

I’m currently developing an iPhone game (watch this space…*) and required a very simple collision detection system. My application is pretty simple and doesn’t require any complex collision engines included in the likes of Chipmunk or Box2d, however, after trawling around the internet for a good few hours looking for a way to do it with the basic cocos2d framework, I decided to write my own method.

*I did release a game – two infact: Wicked Little Devil and Social Break
